         Keshet me Shaar Hagai

Keshet is my second Canaan Dog. She is an import from Israel and arrived in Fort Lauderdale when she was 8 weeks old. Keshet definitely has a personality of her own. Two generations out of the wild, Keshet displays a confidence not seen in my other two Canaan Dogs. Although she can be a challenge at times, barking, digging in the back yard, chasing the other two around the house or simply demanding her needs be met on a timely basis, Keshet is definitely the most affectionate of the three. It is not unusual for her to be under my feet looking directly into my eyes as if to say, what are we going to do next? I speak with her both in English and Hebrew and she appears to strain, cocking her head from side to side, in an apparent effort to capture my every word.

When I call the three dogs to their crates in the morning before I leave for work, Keshet is the only one who stops 20 feet away, lays down, rolls over and demands her tummy be rubbed before committing to her crate for the day. We definitely have our routines and many have been orchestrated by Keshet herself!

I had planned on showing Keshet and so both she and my male, Maccabi, were intact when I slipped-up and found them tied outside one day, while my attention was diverted by the telephone. Several months later, I was the proud breeder of 5 beautiful Canaan Dog puppies. To say Keshet was a natural at being a mom is a great understatement. She was incredible, cleaning, nursing, training and protecting her litter until they were able to function on their own.

Keshet is a powerhouse, often challenging me for the alpha position in our pack but when she gives in, she lifts her butt high into the air in total submission. Although she is strong, energetic, confident and sometimes intimidating to others, Keshet is a loving, loyal sensitive member of our family. She has taught me a lot as we continue to learn from each other.
