ELBA
Best known for its dramatic coastline, the island of Elba features tall promontories and pristine beaches. The main port, Portoferraio, comes alive in summer with a string of picturesque restaurants and cafes. Along with pleasing surroundings, Elba also has a fascinating history. French poet Victor Hugo spent his childhood here and Napoleon was exiled on the island from 1814 to 1815. A small museum houses Napoleon's study, bedroom and library. The nearby island of Montecristo was the inspiration for Alexander Dumas's The Count of Montecristo, and currently functions as a wildlife refuge.
